Wisdom Hunter: I would like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Jason Cyrus Rubino, and I pursue wisdom. I am a musical instrument builder currently living in the Mid-West, Bloomington Indiana specifically. I study Ethnomusicology and Folklore at Indiana University, with a focus on organology in the Middle East.
Current projects include: curating a museum exhibit at the IU Art Museum covering the musical instruments of the Ancient Silk Road Trade Route. This exhibit designates regions of influence through material cultural transmission as well as continuity in traditional instrument building through the ages. At the moment, I am writing fieldwork grant proposals to study ancient arts of instrument building from a great master (Ostad) in Iran.
I call myself an instrument builder, though I am still learning and growing in the field. I have created an instrument of original design that exemplifies a hybridization of multiple native geographic musical instruments from West Africa, Iran, South America, and the Mississippi Delta of the United States. The instrument is called the Satyatar, which in translation from Sanskrit and contemporary Persian means “Truth Speaking String” (Satya: One who speaks truth. Tar: String).
I am also a studio engineer, musician, and composer, which has carried me in the pursuit of knowledge throughout the past thirteen years. I run a recording studio called Sir Salamander Studios, first in Arizona, and then in Kentucky, currently disassembled. I compose a variety of music and record it myself; soundscapes for 3D animation pieces, music for theater production, and obscure drone music heavily influenced by Middle Eastern and East African styles and scales. Currently, I am taking a more minimal path in music and working on a cassette tape of strange sample based music, mostly stemming from my love for early 90’s hip hop music, found sounds, and samples from field recordings from around the earth. I keep my tools simple, and I enjoy making music that way. My current project is “primitive” in production standards, and the idea to revert to such methods was based on the lack of human element in computer based composition of most music today. I pride myself in these limitations and the dynamics speak volumes.
